Argon has the symbol Ar and atomic number 18.
It is found in gaseous form and makes up 0.94% of the Earth’s atmosphere.
It is extracted from the atmosphere through fractionation, a process that also produces nitrogen, oxygen, neon, krypton and xenon.
It is the most used noble gas.
- Symbol: Ar
- Purity: ≥99.99%
- Atomic number: 18
- Atomic mass: 39.948
- It is colorless, odorless, non-toxic and non-corrosive
Argon is used:
- as shielding gas for arc welding
- to prevent oxidation of molten metals and alloys
- as insulating gas for windows with several rows of panes
- in the pharmaceutical industry to replace oxygen at the top of intravenous drug containers, thus extending the shelf life of the product
- to preserve the wine, to prevent oxidation and to extend the quality of the products
- to fill incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, to create a blue light in neon lamps
- mixed with hydrogen, as a protective atmosphere for the heat treatment of certain metals, especially those that are susceptible to nitriding when treated in a nitrogen-based atmosphere
- in spectrometry
Argon is not toxic, but in high concentrations argon is dangerous because it can cause asphyxiation by displacing oxygen.
